New York, October 04, 2024 - PRISM MediaWire - IonQ, (NYSE: IONQ) a leading player in the quantum computing industry, has reached a major milestone on its path to scaling quantum systems by demonstrating remote ion-ion entanglement. Building on the ion-photon entanglement breakthrough announced in February, this September milestone marks the second of four key steps needed to develop photonic interconnects, a crucial component of IonQ’s strategy for quantum networking and system scalability.
"With the latest advancements, we are now transitioning to the next phase – transferring ion-ion entanglement to the Quantum Processing Unit (QPU). Our commitment is to expand the limits of this technology and advance photonic interconnects to a stage where they can be incorporated into commercially viable quantum computers."
Peter Chapman, President & CEO of IonQ.
In this latest achievement, IonQ’s R&D team successfully entangled two trapped ion qubits from separate wells using photons and is a critical part of establishing quantum communication links, key to scaling quantum systems. The IonQ team achieved remote entanglement by developing a system to collect photons from two trap wells and routing them to a single detection hub. No company has previously demonstrated this technology at a stage where it can be integrated into enterprise-grade quantum computers.
IonQ is making significant progress in developing modular quantum computing systems by prioritizing performance, scalability, and enterprise-level features.
